Strewn, Hither and Thither

Art Show
The HUB-Robeson Galleries are proud to present Strewn, Hither and Thither a solo exhibition of inflatables by artist Claire Ashley. All are welcome to a free, informal celebration on Sunday, November 10th 4-6 pm. We welcome classroom visits and offer student led tours.
In conjunction with the opening of the show, a live performance will take place-12 students will inhabit Ashley’s sculptures and perform her work Hot Rocks, wherein the artist speculates on the future evolution of our species, whether on or off planet.
Ashley’s painted inflatable sculptures takes their cue in part from the features of a post glacial, terminal moraine landscape, where boulders have been plucked and gouged out of the landscape and dumped as the melting glacier retreats, left to populate the landscape in random patterns. The exhibition, Strewn, Hither and Thither, fills the gallery with these boulders, exploding the possibilities of painting, these kinetic boulders float and lumber throughout the gallery, irreverent and deliberately egalitarian. The boulder resonates both personal and global connections for the artist’s relationship to rock climbing as well as the shape of our changing ecological environment. However, it is also perhaps, a subtle metaphor for the artist’s own sense of helplessness in our current political climate as a green-carded, permanent resident alien.
