Raised in Ravensdale, Washington got her start at the age of eight. Taught herself to sing as well as play piano, in later years instructed herself on the guitar, soon after Carlile developed a band with her brothers Tim and Phil Hasenroth.
In 2004 came her record deal, she signed with Columbia Records and since her career hasn't seen the ground.
