Edgar Allan Poe was thought to have stayed in Potters Mills at the Eutaw House in 1840 while settling a family estate in Poe Valley. Potters Bank, as it was called then, was one of the most noted areas in the state among the traveling public at that time. The town was founded in 1788 by General James Potter and given the name of Potters Mills which was taken from the fact that Potter had established a grist and saw mill nearby. General Potter was a veteran of the French and Indian War and The American Revolution. Descendants of Potter include Governor Andrew Curtain and General Gregg, the latter of whom commanded the Union army cavalry division which halted the Confederates under the command of General Jeb Stuart at Rummel's farm on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg.A letter from President George Washington to General Potter is currently on file at the Centre County Library.
